出行前看網路上的蘭嶼遊記，無非就是水上活動與奇岩怪石，實在很沒意思。於是報名了「徒步環島」遊學團，由輔大專門研究原住民文化的教授帶隊，深入各個部落去了解達悟文化。
正如教授所說，網路上遊記總提到蘭嶼有所謂的「雙獅岩」、「龍頭岩」--但這些都是漢人所取的名字，達悟人何曾見過獅子或龍？如果來你來蘭嶼也只隨波逐流去了這些「景點」，或許你從頭到尾都沒有認識這座「人之島」。
